Welcome to the Woodwind Studio
at Coastal Carolina University

directed by Dr. Eric Schultz @ericschultzclarinet

  • A woman outdoors playing the flute, wearing a white top, with trees and a building in the background.

    Project-oriented

The studio encourages students to take on projects that mean something. Diamond, a flute/music education major, is working on a recital of all women composers!

  • Two musicians, a man and a woman, perform outdoors during the daytime. The man plays the clarinet and is dressed in a light blue shirt and beige pants, while the woman plays the flute, wearing glasses and a black top with sheer polka dot sleeves. They are focused on sheet music on a stand in front of them, with a red brick building and trees in the background.

    Inclusive

All of the woodwind professors at Coastal work closely together to ensure that students feel safe, welcome, supported, and valued, no matter where they come from.

  • A man playing a grand piano and a woman playing a clarinet performing outdoors under a covered walkway with brick walls and hanging lantern lights.

    Relevant

Project support from the Edwards Center for Inclusive Excellence has allowed Hailey, a clarinet/music education major, to research traditional repertoire for the clarinet and work on diversifying the pieces that we commonly perform today as a student research fellow.

  • A man in a black polo shirt holding a clarinet, standing outdoors in front of a brick building and greenery, smiling at the camera.

    Ensembles

Victor, a clarinet/music education major, is involved in many of our ensembles at Coastal, from the Wind Symphony to the marching band, and even some community ensembles like the Long Bay Youth Symphony and North Myrtle Beach Band.

  • A man with medium-length curly hair and a beard holding a clarinet, wearing a teal polo shirt with a university logo, standing outdoors with a building in the background.

    Major in Music!

Chris is a clarinet performance major, but there are other options at Coastal, including Performance, Music Education, Commercial Music and Jazz, and General Studies.

  • A woman with long brown hair, glasses, and a septum piercing, smiling and holding a bassoon, seated outdoors in front of a white column and brick wall.

    Minor in Music!

Yes, we have a music minor in addition to our many major options. Charlea here is a bass clarinet minor (and yes, that is a brand new 2021 Buffet Prestige Bass Clarinet thanks to our very supportive department!).

As we say at Coastal, “Chants Up!”

Opportunity for students to work with faculty!

  • A stage with a performer in patterned costume, and an orchestra below with musicians, including a pianist, wearing masks, as they rehearse for a theatrical production.

    Musical Theater

Music Performance major Nadia had the opportunity to study woodwind doubling and play with Dr. Schultz and other faculty in the musical!

  • Large group of performers on stage dressed in vintage clothing, raising their arms in a joyful gesture during a theatrical performance. The stage background is blue, and some paper or scripts appear to be suspended in mid-air. Audience and musicians can be seen in the foreground.

    Networking

Several CCU faculty (including Dr. S) have performed for Broadway orchestras in their careers, and many alumni are now on Broadway - this is a great network to have!

  • A theatrical stage with actors in period costumes performing, some wearing masks, while musicians play live behind them in a dimly lit theater.

    Only undergraduate!

An all-undergraduate program means that you can get opportunities like this at Coastal - not just the graduate students like at big-box schools.

Yes, we have a beautiful recital hall, concert hall, and recording studio; but we also love performing in our courtyard! The acoustics are amazing!

What do students at Coastal have to say?

"He lives and breathes music."

"Dr. Schultz is a one-of-a-kind professor. I have never had a professor who cares so much about his students in my entire school life. He is so talented, caring, compassionate and just an amazing individual. He has definitely been one of the reasons why I am doing my music minor. Without him, I wouldn't have made it this far."

"Dr. Schultz has introduced certain topics to me about the evolution of music in relation to racism and discrimination that I would not have known if he was not my teacher. Some teachers aren't allowed to do that but he did and I appreciate that."
